What Does A Wedding Celebrant Actually Do - The Wedding Charmer

If you’ve never been to a celebrant-led wedding, you might be wondering: what does a wedding celebrant actually do?

Is it just the person who stands at the front, says a few nice words and tells everyone when to kiss?

Well… there’s a little more to it than that.

As a wedding celebrant, I’m there to help you create a ceremony that feels like you — not a copy-and-paste version of every other wedding you’ve been to.

So, what does a wedding celebrant do?

Put simply, a wedding celebrant creates and conducts your wedding ceremony.

But the really important part happens before your wedding day.

I get to know you as a couple: how you met, what makes you laugh, the things you love about each other, your adventures, your quirks and, occasionally, the stories you probably never thought would make it into a wedding ceremony.

From all of that, I create a ceremony that tells your story.

It might be romantic, funny, emotional, relaxed, traditional — or a wonderfully chaotic combination of all five.

Your ceremony, your way

One of the biggest benefits of having a wedding celebrant is the freedom to make your ceremony personal.

Want to include your dog? Absolutely.

Want your best friend to do a reading? Of course.

Want to write your own vows? I can help with that.

Want to skip anything that makes you cringe? Please do.

There’s no requirement for your ceremony to follow a particular script. Together, we can choose the words, readings, rituals, music and moments that actually mean something to you.

After all, your wedding ceremony should sound like your relationship, not a legal instruction manual.

A celebrant also keeps things moving

On the day itself, I’m not just there to read your ceremony.

I’ll help make sure everyone knows what’s happening, coordinate with your suppliers where needed, guide you through the ceremony and make sure those all-important words are actually said.

I’ll also keep an eye on the practical things — because someone needs to notice that the rings are still sitting safely in someone’s pocket.

And if something unexpected happens? That’s okay.

Weather changes. Microphones misbehave. Flower girls get stage fright. Best men forget where they put the rings.

A good celebrant knows how to roll with it without making your guests feel like anything has gone wrong.

What about the legal bit?

This depends on where you’re getting married, as the legal requirements vary.

In many places, celebrants can conduct legally recognized marriages, while in others you may need to complete the legal formalities separately. If your destination wedding is in France, you will have to obtain legal paperwork from the country where you reside (before or after the ceremony).

Your celebrant should explain what you need to do and help make the process as straightforward as possible.

More than just the ceremony

For me, being a celebrant is about more than standing at the front for 30 minutes.

It’s about helping you create a moment that you’ll remember for years.

It’s the story you tell. The promises you make. The laughter when someone says something unexpected. The happy tears. The nervous excitement. That moment when you look at each other and think, “We’re actually doing this!”

And yes, I’ll probably remind you to slow down when you start racing through your vows.

So, do you need a wedding celebrant?

If you want a ceremony that feels personal, relaxed and completely your own, a celebrant could be the perfect fit.

As The Wedding Charmer, I believe your ceremony should be one of the most enjoyable parts of your wedding day — not something to rush through to get to the party afterwards.

Because your love story deserves more than a standard script.

It deserves to be told properly. With heart, personality and, ideally, a little laughter along the way.
